Our monograph collection continues to grow and develop. Some areas in particular have been enhanced in the past few months. For your interest, the following are a few subjects in which new materials have recently been added.
Books:
A list of new books acquired by the library over the past two months can be viewed at the Web and was also distributed to you in paper form recently.
For those who use Windows 2000, use Explorer for new books in order to view the Hebrew. Choose the Hebrew Visual font. The list includes links to directly to the library's holdings and book location.
Important: Please do not direct students to particular databases for their literature searches. The reference librarians are here to advise them on this. We often find students searching without success in the "wrong" database, or using an ineffective search strategy. Lecturers are requested to direct their students to use the reference services in the library in order to do the most efficient search for the material they need.
The following is an overview of our reference policy. For more information on this policy or to receive a copy of the full policy in Hebrew, contact Jody at 2035 or ielib@ie.
IE LIBRARY REFERENCE POLICY:
Academic faculty members may request searches for information or
literature to be carried out by the reference librarians. Requests can be
made in person, by email, or by internal mail. A reference "interview" is
desirable to be sure the librarian has all the required information for
the search, and this can be carried out by telephone or email if desired.
When searching the databases independently, help is available by phone or email. For help in choosing an appropriate database for your search, formulating search strategies, or to request a librarian-performed search, please contact the reference librarians at 2035 or ielib@ie.
Students studying for advanced degrees can come to the library and be guided personally by a librarian in their literature searches. The librarian will keep a record of reference meetings with the student and which searches were conducted. As the subject changes or is redefined, the librarians can direct the student to the proper sources of information and articles. Advanced students may have as much personal attention from the reference librarians as is needed.
First degree students may use the databases in the library and can receive short guidelines from a librarian in their independent use. However, a librarian will not do their searches for them. Usually, the first degree student needs only one or two sources for his assignment, and for courses where many students will have the same assignment, we appreciate having the assignment guidelines delivered to the library BEFORE the students receive it so that we may be prepared to help them in an efficient manner.
Tutorials: Guided tutorials about the databases available are provided by appointment. These presentations will give the user an overview of the databases available in his or her area of research or teaching and an introduction to the interface of each one. The tutorials can be done for one or two people at a time. To make an appointment for a tutorial contact Ilana at 2035, or imerhav@tx.
New Databases:
Hanit is a local CD ROM database which includes Israeli laws and standards dealing with economics, taxes, and employment. It also includes the full text from the Hebrew journals "NETO" and "YEDA L'MEDA" from recent years.
PsycInfo is the the APA's premier index to the psychological literature. Access to PsycInfo is now available, both online, and from the library's local network. PsycInfo is updated monthly.
The Technion community has access to more than 6 thousand full text electronic journals, and new titles and publishers are being added all the time. The alphabetical list is kept up to date as possible, and other journals are accessed by way of the databases. Consult a librarian when in question as to whether we have access to a particular journal. The journal page on the library's website is: http://library.technion.ac.il/ejournals/ejournals.htm
ACCESS TO E-JOURNALS AND DATABASES
The computer you use must have the PROXY set correctly for access.
(See info link at top of e-journals web page)
Most of the electronic journals can be successfully viewed using either
Netscape 4.7, or Microsoft Explorer. When you experience trouble, it is
advised to try the alternate browser before seeking assistance.
Please contact the librarians if you experience any trouble accessing the
journals.
Please remember: You can access the journals ONLY from a Technion computer, either directly, or by using dial-back from an outside computer.
The reprints are now in process of being switched over to the internet interface. We apologize for any inconvenience which occurs during this transition period.
For the present semester the library received a very large number of papers to be included as reprints, and we are only now finishing the scanning of this material. Please remember that there is considerable work involved in keeping the reprint collection current and that there is a time lag between the library's receipt of an article to reprint and it's appearance in the system.
To all the faculty members who have provided input in the selection of new books for the library, our appreciation. We would be pleased to receive more suggestions for acquisitions. From time to time Batya sends you catalogs from publishers of books in our subject areas, and your input (by checking off the desired books) is vital to our decision making process. In this way we can build a collection which most fits your needs and desires for the library.
Please remember that all ILL requests MUST be accompanied by a research budget number. Address requests for ILL to Tanya at ielib@ie, or by phone at 2035 or 2038.
The library's collection of video recordings is growing. Subjects in which videos have recently been acquired include the following:
