A new Eastern Mediterranean Region of the
International Biometric Society
Dear Colleague,
We invite you to join the newly formed Region of the International Biometric
Society in the Eastern Mediterranean area.
Initially the Region covered the following countries: Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Palestinian National Authority, and Turkey. Recently, Saudi Arabia joined the Region as well.
The International Biometric Society (IBS) is a worldwide organization that exists to promote and develop the use of sound biometric (that is biostatistical and biomathematical) methodology in the study of medicine, biology and agriculture. Members include biostatisticians and general applied statisticians, as well as epidemiologists, clinicians, biologists and agriculturists with a strong interest in the methodological aspects of their subject. The Society publishes the well known journal Biometrics which is one of the leading applied statistical journals in the world, as well as a newsletter that covers the Society's activities and other notable biometric events round the world.
The Society incorporates many geographical Regions including Eastern-North America, Western-North America, Britain, Italy, and Australia, to name a few. Now, there is a new IBS Region in the Eastern Mediterranean. We feel that with the current activity in medical, biological and agricultural research in this area, and the increasing number of persons working in the area of statistical and mathematical applications to these fields, it is a great time for the development of the EMR Region. Our main aims are to bring together people in the Eastern Mediterranean who are working on problems relating to biometry. We hope to hold regular meetings in the region and to circulate a newsletter to members. The 1st Inaugural Euroconference of EMR was held in Athens, Greece, in January 2001 while the 2nd Inaugural Conference of the EMR was held in Antalya, Turkey, in January 2003, both with great success.
